Attar al Has: the Istanbul house, explained

Attar al Has is a young niche house from Istanbul that has built a following quickly among fragrance lovers and, more recently, arrived in the United States. If you have come across a review of Skin Musk or Wild Emerald and want to know what sits behind the name before ordering a sample, this is the short version: who they are, what they make, how the line is organized, and how to approach it without buying blind.

First, the name

"Attar" is an old word. In the Middle East and South Asia it refers to a concentrated perfume oil, traditionally distilled into sandalwood and worn on the skin without alcohol. That is not what Attar al Has sells. Here, Attar al Has is the name of the house, and its perfumes are alcohol-based sprays in the Western format: extraits de parfum for most of the line, with a few compositions labeled differently by the brand (we state the concentration on every product page and stay silent where we could not verify it).

We insist on this because search engines and shoppers conflate the two. If you were looking for traditional attar oils, this is not that. If you were looking for a Turkish niche house working with French and Middle Eastern perfumers, keep reading.

Who they are

The house was founded in 2021 and is headquartered in Istanbul, with a second office in London. In four years it has released roughly two dozen compositions, exhibited at Esxence in Milan (the main niche perfumery fair) and built a retail footprint across Europe, the Gulf and now the United States. The brand's own language leans on the idea of a bridge: Istanbul as the point where Anatolian rose, Gulf oud and resin traditions meet a contemporary, Grasse-trained way of building a perfume.

What matters for you as a buyer is less the story than the method. Attar al Has does not have a single in-house nose. It commissions established perfumers, and it publishes their names. On the references we carry, the credits include:

  • Mohammad Tammam Mando: Kamuthraa, Passion Oud, Metallic Oud, My Magic, Golden Ice. The oud and rose backbone of the line.
  • Karine Vinchon Spehner (Robertet): Skin Musk, Wonderful Tonka, Anatolian Rose, Gold Sunset. The softer, more textural side.
  • Sidonie Lancesseur (Robertet): Liberty's Way, Yellow Splash. The luminous, summer-leaning pair.
  • Marc Daniel Heimgartner: Exquisite, the loukoum-and-pistachio gourmand.
  • Mirella Pomina: Fleur de Tabac.
  • David Chieze: Spice Rose.
  • Hüseyin Erdoğmuş: Leather Effecto.

The six Terra Mysteria perfumes are not credited to a named perfumer on the public databases at the time of writing.

This is a useful signal. Houses that publish perfumer credits are usually confident in the juice rather than the packaging, and it lets you follow a nose you already like. If Skin Musk works on you, Wonderful Tonka and Anatolian Rose are the logical next samples, not because of the notes but because the same hand built them.

How the line is organized

Attar al Has does not label its perfumes by gender; every reference is presented as unisex. The catalog falls into a few informal groups, which is how we have arranged our collections:

The oud and rose core. Kamuthraa, Passion Oud, Metallic Oud and Fleur de Tabac carry the house's Eastern references: agarwood in the base, saffron and pink pepper up top, rose in the heart. None of them is a raw, barnyard oud. They are Western-structured perfumes where oud is one material among several.

The rose studies. Anatolian Rose (saffron, apple, rose, amber), Spice Rose (grapefruit, pink pepper, clary sage, olibanum, patchouli) and My Magic (Damask rose, sugar, osmanthus, Madagascar vanilla) treat the same flower three ways: warm, spicy-chypre, and sweet. Turkey is one of the world's two great rose-growing regions, and the house leans into it.

The skin-close references. Skin Musk is the house's most discussed perfume in the US, an almond-peach-musk composition that stays near the body. Tiger's Eye and Golden Ice are its woodier and more floral cousins.

The gourmands. Exquisite (loukoum, candied fruit, pistachio, dulce de leche), Wonderful Tonka (cacao pod, tonka, patchouli) and two from Terra Mysteria, Radiant Peridot and Velvet Morganite, form the sweeter end of the range.

The bright ones. Yellow Splash (bergamot, cardamom, tea, ambroxan) and Liberty's Way (lavender, tangerine, orange blossom, tea) are the house's summer references and its most conventional in structure.

Terra Mysteria. A collection of six extraits de parfum: Wild Emerald, Velvet Morganite, Tiger's Eye, Radiant Peridot, Harmonic Tourmaline and Ethereal Moonstone. We cover them one by one in our guide to Terra Mysteria.

What they smell like, honestly

Three generalizations hold across the range.

First, these are dense, sweet-leaning compositions. Vanilla, tonka, benzoin, amber and praline appear in most base notes. Even the "fresh" references (Yellow Splash, Liberty's Way) have a warm amber floor. If you prefer dry, bitter or aquatic perfumes, sample cautiously.

Second, projection is moderate and longevity is long. As extraits, most of the line is built for a close-to-medium aura that lasts through a working day rather than a room-filling cloud. Reviewers who expected a loud oud from Passion Oud tend to be surprised; it is a fruity chypre with oud in the background.

Third, the unexpected top notes are real, not marketing. Wild Emerald opens on potato, saffron and cumin. Exquisite opens on Turkish delight. Metallic Oud has a genuinely cold, mineral edge. These are the moments where the house is most interesting and most divisive, and they are precisely why we sell 2 ml samples of everything.

Pricing and formats in the US

Attar al Has sells its full bottles at $275–$295 on its own site. At Notes & Scents, our 100 ml bottles are priced at $175–$199, 10 ml travel sprays at $30, and 2 ml samples at $8–$10. Every order ships by ground from New York with UPS or FedEx, shipping is free from $100, and every full-size bottle comes with complimentary samples, while stocks last.

We recommend the same route for every first-time buyer: two to four 2 ml samples, a week of wearing each, then the 10 ml of the one you keep reaching for. The 100 ml is a decision for later. Our article on how to sample niche perfume without wasting money walks through the arithmetic.

Where to start

If you only order one sample, make it the one closest to what you already wear:

  • You wear soft musks or "clean" perfumes: Skin Musk.
  • You wear ambery ouds: Kamuthraa or Metallic Oud.
  • You wear gourmands: Exquisite or Wonderful Tonka.
  • You wear roses: Anatolian Rose.
  • You wear nothing like this and want the house at its strangest: Wild Emerald.
